Whether it's slow burning, catchy yet startling honest songs like, "10:30 AM,” or "Same Old Sin," or scorching punk songs such as "Sinister Man,“ or "The Blessed Could Care Less,” or “You Dont Wanna Be My Girlfriend,” or the hard driving but thoughtful Post Post Punk / Hard Indie songs like “Hippie Mom,” or “Something’s Broken,“ and the pounding hard rockers like “Sold,“ and “(No No No) You Gotta Go,” Couch Professor‘s debut eponymously titled album is first and foremost a geuine rock album driven by guitars, bass, drums, and unforgettable melodies.
While the members of the band are playing shows in support of their recent release, they’re still writing songs for a second album - many of which they are already including in current set lists. They hope to start record their sophomore album, tentatively titled “Study Music,” in the fall / winter of 2019.
Since they have a wide variety of musical tastes and life experiences their material reflects this and you are for a real treat. The act features songs that will make you think, soak you in blissful harmoniy, melodies and acoustic guitars, and other numbers that are loud, fast, and heavy and suitable fare for pits anywhere. They pride themselves on their musical versatility. Despite the different styles of music the band plays - you will notice a commonality amongst all their material, and whether slow or fast or super fast, sweet or angry, driving or instropsective, you will recognize these songs as the work of a singular band.
This band has been put together with like minded individuals who deliver thoughtful, sometimes humorous, sometimes angry, sometimes introspective, sometimes driving and heavy, but always extremely listenable, memorable, and exceptional hard indie / post punk rock music.
Please reach out to the band by writing us at firstname.lastname@example.org
You can also call or text at (703) 636-2273.
You can also reach us at the Couch Professor Facebook page (to which you can find a link here on this website).
We hope you enjoy the music and we can't wait to see you at a show in the near future!
Matt Guy is best known for his guitar playing and songwriting. He is the former founder of DC Area alt rock / punk bands Geek Technique and Monkey Brawl. While he released music as a solo artist, he feels most at home in an setting. Couch Professor is an egalitarian band which is completely collaborative. Matt still remains a big creative force In the band. He has written a many of the songs their recently released album and frequently co-writes with Singer / Multi-Instrumentalist Nolan Hill, bassist/guitarist Tom Drake and Drummer Chris Wemple. Couch Professor is brimming with talent, energy , and shared passion for writing, recording, and performing astounding rock music.

He still goes to see live music as much as possible...and likes to play out as much as he can.
While writing, recording and performing music is close to being Matt Guy's first love...Matt is sort of a weird guy. He really loves math. He has a degree in mathematics and continues to study the subject.and is continuing to study the subject.
He loves his beautiful and talented wife Megan very much. They live with two cats, Joanie and Battle Cat, both girls, in a comfortable house in Fairfax County, Virginia. Matt's daughter, Caroline, with whom he is also very close lives close, is herself an aspiring musician and singer and has worked with Matt in the past. They have plans to collaborate on new material in the future. Matt has a son living in Charleston, SC and is lucky both his parents are living and tries to see them often. He has many aunts, uncles, and 15 first cousins. His sister and his neices and nephew live in London. He’s lucky enough to see them often. He is also quite found of his in-laws and his wife’s family.

He hopes you enjoy the band’s music and looks forward to seeing you at s show soon.
Nolan Hill is Couch Professor’a primary singer and also sometimes plays guitar and bass as well for the band.
His favorite current artists include, Favorite musicians right now: Father John Misty, Mac Demarco, Radiohead, Sun Kil Moon, Fleet Foxes, Elliot Smith. Sebadoh, Archers of Loaf, Dinosaur Jr, and Parquet Courts.
He also loves and was influenced by, Neil Young, The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and the Beach Boys.
He loves "all kinds of food and wine."
He enjoys film and his favorite directors are Quentin Tarentino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Nikolas Winding Refn, and Christopher Nolan.
Nolan is a really talented musician and singer. He is also a very good songwriter and hard worker in the studio and on stage. His vocal style is admirable and ranges from a low growl, smooth baritone, up into the higher registers and even falsetto. While rock music remains his passion, he once sang the national anthem in front of a few thousand fans at a local event.
Nolan has a great since of humor and is infamous in his circle of friends for abbreviating many words, especially names, often including those that do not need abbreviation. For instance, as well as answer to Nolan, he answers to "the Lan."
Nolan is a real rising talent and will benefit the band’s music not only in live performances, but also in helping to write and record songs for the soon to be released new album.
Tom Drake is an accomplished guitar player and bassist. He has played with Matt in some previous projects, including the band, "Monkey Brawl." He also plays guitar with a folk rock group located in Prince William County.
Tom agreed to join the band, if and only if he "liked," the new songs Matt and Nolan we’re writing. Matt sent Tom dome demos of their new material and Tom listened to the scratch tracks while on vacation and, thankfully, he decided he did like the songs and agreed to join the band. We couldn't be happier to have him.
Tom enjoys a wide variety of music. Some of his early influences were Cream, Alvin Lee, The Rolling Stones, and the Beatles.
Currently he listens to a lot of blues and rock music. Tom, likes alternative rock, especially bands like the Pixies.
Tom's other hobbies include bicycling, cross country skiing, and other outdoor activities.
He lives with his wife in Prince William County and has a daughter.
Aside from being a seasoned musician, and rock steady bass player, he is a good all around guy with a good sense of humor and calming disposition. He is also very tech savvy and good with equipment. He would be a welcome addition to any band so you'll understand how happy the guys were to have him join Couch Professor.
Chris once described himself as “just the bloke in the back," but he actually is a force at the forefront of Coach Professor’s sound.
Chris is an imposing figure behind the kit (Chris is 6' 5" - Matt is also 6' 5" but doesn't seem to project as much command as Chris in this manner), Chris is a seasoned pro with hundreds of shows under his belt in a variety of bands and styles. He believes drums should drive the music, not beat it to death. He is not some mindless basher, nor is he a timid "lite-jazz" tapper. He understands dynamics, musical space, rhythm, pace, and plays with taste. Chris displays a wide range of dynamics, from the hard-hitting songs like the 170-BPM, 58-second “You Don’t Wanna Be My Girlfriend” and cut-time “Sinister Man” to the less-is-more of the slower indie rock songs like “Something’s Broken” and “We’re Nothing Alike.” Besides driving the music, he often influences the band in arranging songs. The guys rely upon and listen when Chris has an idea on how to improve a song. His solid and innovative beats along with his tasteful fills are the engine which drives this band.
Chris is a DC native with a very wry and somewhat dark sense of humor. He is inspired and supported by his loving wife Gyöngyi, as well as his son and stepdaughters. He enjoys nature, wildlife, multiple styles of music, and is most importantly a band anchor and rock-solid drummer.
Matt Guy once said, “Finding a reliable, technically savvy and hard-hitting drummer who understands song structure is one of the most difficult aspects of forming a new band.” The band had several drummers scheduled to audition. Chris was the first drummer auditioned - and they asked him if he wanted the job immediately! Matt had to cancel the other auditions - but it was worth it. He is that good. We are lucky to have Chris and you will quickly be able to understand why the moment you hear him on stage.
Chris uses Pearl drums and pedals, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, and Promark sticks.
You’ll hear his talented playing, finesse, and raw power in every song on Couch Professor‘s eponymous release.
Come see a Couch Professor show and experience this man behind the kit for yourselves. You are certain to agree that the guys made the right decision in asking Chris to join.
