The Music

We are currently working on new songs for our sophomore albums tentatively titled, “Study Music,” with our new lead singer, Craig. We will begin to post some of the scratch tracks in the ”Audio,” section on this page soon!

Whether it's slow burning, catchy yet startling honest songs like, "10:30 AM,” or "Same Old Sin," or scorching punk songs such as "Sinister Man,“ or "The Blessed Could Care Less,” or “You Dont Wanna Be My Girlfriend,”  or the hard driving but thoughtful Post Post Punk / Hard Indie songs like “Hippie Mom,” or “Something’s Broken,“ and the pounding hard rockers like “Sold,“ and “(No No No) You Gotta Go,”  Couch Professor‘s debut eponymously titled album is first and foremost a geuine rock album driven by guitars, bass, drums, and unforgettable melodies.

While the members of the band are playing shows in support of their recent release, they’re still writing songs for a second album - many of which they are already including in current set lists. They hope to start record their sophomore album, tentatively titled “Study Music,” in the fall / winter of 2019.

Since they have a wide variety of musical tastes and life experiences their material reflects this and you are for a real treat.  The act features songs that will make you think, soak you in blissful harmoniy, melodies and acoustic guitars, and other numbers that are loud, fast, and heavy and suitable fare for  pits anywhere.  They pride themselves on their musical versatility. Despite the different styles of music the band plays - you will notice a commonality amongst all their material, and whether slow or fast or super fast, sweet or angry, driving or instropsective, you will recognize these songs as the work of a singular band.

This band has been put together with like minded individuals who deliver thoughtful, sometimes humorous, sometimes angry, sometimes introspective, sometimes driving and heavy, but always extremely listenable, memorable, and exceptional  hard indie / post punk. Pkease feel free to write us at:

Tom Drake

Tom Drake is an accomplished guitar player and bassist.  He has played with Matt in some previous projects, including the band, "Monkey Brawl."  He also plays guitar with a folk rock  group located in Prince William County.

Tom agreed to join the band, if and only if he "liked," the new songs Matt and Nolan we’re writing. Matt sent Tom dome demos of their new material and Tom listened to the scratch tracks while on vacation and, thankfully, he decided he did like the songs and agreed to join the band. We couldn't be happier to have him.

Tom enjoys a wide variety of music.  Some of his early influences were Cream, Alvin Lee, The Rolling Stones, and the Beatles.

Currently he listens to a lot of blues and rock music.  Tom, likes alternative rock, especially bands like the Pixies.

Tom's other hobbies include bicycling, cross country skiing, and other outdoor activities.

He lives with his wife in Prince William County and has a daughter.

Aside from being a seasoned musician, and rock steady bass player, he is a good all around guy with a good sense of humor and calming disposition.  He is also very tech savvy and good with equipment. He would be a welcome addition to any band so you'll understand how happy the guys were to have him join Couch Professor.

Craig Guthery

Craig Guthery

Craig Guthery

Craig Guthery is Couch Professor’s new lead vocalist, having joined us in March 2020.  Craig also plays guitar and bass on a few songs and is contributing lyrics for our new material.

Craig’s influences reach all the way back to proto-punks Lou Reed, Patti Smith, The Kinks (yes, those Kinks), and Iggy (with and without the Stooges), then on to The Clash, Gang of Four, Black Flag, the Replacements, and Dead Kennedys, before morphing slightly into Talking Heads, Joy Division/New Order, the Cure, and Public Image Ltd., with a side trip to KMFDM, Rammstein, and Nine Inch Nails.

His list of “best at what they do” includes Charles Dickens, Mark Rothko, Stanley Kubrick, Paul Newman, Edgar Allan Poe, and David Bowie—all of whom he has tried to channel through his singing at one point or another.

Craig plays tournament poker.  Well.

Chris Wemple III

Chris once described himself as “just the bloke in the back," but he actually is a force at the forefront of Coach Professor’s sound.

Chris is an imposing figure behind the kit (Chris is 6' 5" - Matt is also 6' 5" but doesn't seem to project as much command as Chris in this manner), Chris is a seasoned pro with hundreds of shows under his belt in a variety of bands and styles.  He believes drums should drive the music, not beat it to death.  He is not some mindless basher, nor is he a timid "lite-jazz" tapper. He understands dynamics, musical space, rhythm, pace, and plays with taste.  Chris displays a wide range of dynamics, from the hard-hitting songs like the 170-BPM, 58-second “You Don’t Wanna Be My Girlfriend” and cut-time “Sinister Man” to the less-is-more of the slower indie rock songs like “Something’s Broken” and “We’re Nothing Alike.”  Besides driving the music, he often influences the band in arranging songs. The guys rely upon and listen when Chris has an idea on how to improve a song. His solid and innovative beats along with his tasteful fills are the engine which drives this band.

Chris is a DC native with a very wry and somewhat dark sense of humor.  He is inspired and supported by his loving wife Gyöngyi, as well as his son and stepdaughters.  He enjoys nature, wildlife, multiple styles of music, and is most importantly a band anchor and rock-solid drummer.

Matt Guy once said, “Finding a reliable, technically savvy and hard-hitting drummer who understands song structure is one of the most difficult aspects of forming a new band.”  The band had several drummers scheduled to audition. Chris was the first drummer auditioned - and they asked him if he wanted the job immediately!  Matt had to cancel the other auditions - but it was worth it.  He is that good.  We are lucky to have Chris and you will quickly be able to understand why the moment you hear him on stage.

Chris uses Pearl drums and pedals, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, and Promark sticks.

You’ll hear his talented playing, finesse, and raw power in every song on Couch Professor‘s eponymous release.

Come see a Couch Professor show and experience this man behind the kit for yourselves. You are certain to agree that the guys made the right decision in asking Chris to join.
